Underwater Archaeological Investigations of Four Potentially Significant Remote Sensing Targets, Canaveral Harbor Entrance Channel Widener, Brevard County, Florida

Summary

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, has proposed to widen the entrance channel to Canaveral Harbor, Brevard County, Florida. Because of the potential for shipwrecks and other submerged cultural resources in the vicinity of Cape Canaveral, the Jacksonville District contracted Tidewater Atlantic Research, Inc. (TAR) of Washington, North Carolina, to conduct a literature search and remote sensing survey to identify any submerged cultural resources in the vicinity of the proposed widening project. TAR conducted field investigations and historical research for the project in 1997 and recovered nine magnetic and/or sonar target signatures, four of which were recommended for further underwater archaeological investigations to identify the nature of the material producing the target signatures.

Jacksonville District determined that the four potentially significant targets identified by TAR were threatened by the navigation improvements. As a result, Mid-Atlantic Technology and Environmental Research, Inc. (M-AT/ER) was contracted to conduct an underwater archaeological survey of the four target locations. The project objectives were to relocate, identify, and assess the archaeological significance of the material producing the magnetic signatures. The field investigations were conducted from 23 through 25 January 1998.

As a result of M-AT/ER's underwater investigations, each of the targets was identified as modern debris, including I -inch wire rope, a single clump anchor and shackle, and a portion of a dredge pipe flange. These items are probably associated with earlier dredging activities. No further investigations are recommended
