Submerged Cultural Resources Remote Sensing Survey of the Canaveral Shoals Borrow Areas 1 and 2, Brevard County, Florida

Summary

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District is proposing to dredge sand from existing offshore borrow areas, Canaveral Shoals 1 and 2 located off Florida's central eastern coast, approximately 1 mile southeast of Cape Canaveral. In order to comply with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' responsibilities towards cultural resources, Panamerican Consultants, Inc. of Memphis, Tennessee, was contracted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to conduct a comprehensive remote sensing survey of the submerged Project Area.

The survey utilized a magnetometer, sidescan sonar, and subbottom profiler, and located 76 magnetic anomalies, 25 sidescan sonar targets, and no subbottom paleofeatures during the current survey. Analysis of data indicates that of the 76 magnetic anomalies, 25 have magnetic signature characteristics potentially indicative of significant historic resources, namely National Aeronautics and Space Administration/U.S. Air Force rocket cylinders. This includes nine anomalies and associated sonar contacts that coincide with nine of ten target locations previously identified as rocket cylinders, the tenth target not relocated. Additionally, a total of 16 new magnetic anomalies, two with sonar contacts, located in areas not previously surveyed, are thought, based on their signal characteristics, to represent rocket cylinders. There are no features that have the potential for submerged prehistoric sites. The 16 anomalies and two associated sonar contacts are recommended for avoidance or further investigation.
