Inventory of Cold War Properties: Scott Air Force Base Belleville, Illinois

Author(s): Karen J. Weitze

Year: 1996

Summary

Scott Air Force Base Inventory of Cold War Properties. A total of 60 structures and buildings were inventoried at Scott Air Force Base, including radar facilities at Turkey Hill and Plum Hill. At time of publication, in 1993, none of the inventoried structures and buildings were listed or formally evaluated as eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, and none are interpreted as potentially eligible.

However, Building 3200, the ANG Alert Hangar of ca. 1946-1947, was determined to be a rare example of the earliest standardized Cold War fighter-interceptor alert hangar, modified in a secondary configuration and moved in 1952. The report recommends that when the hangar reaches 50 years of altered use at Scott Air Force Base in the year 2002, it should be reevaluated for National Register of Historic Places eligibility under criterion C, for its rarity, and under criteria consideration B, as a moved property.
