An Archaeological and Historic Resources Inventory at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland (Draft)

Summary

A draft copy of an inventory and evaluation of archaeological and historic resources at Andrews Air Force Base, Davidsonville Transmitter Station, and Brandywine Receiving Station. Results from the base-wide archaeological investigations include evidence of 5 prehistoric sites at Davidsonville Transmitter Station and 11 historic archaeological sites at Andrews Air Force Base; one site contains both a prehistoric and historic component. An isolated artifact (projectile point) was also encountered at Brandywine Receiving Station. Data recovered from 6 of the 11 historic sites at Andrews Air Force Base indicate the potential for significant archaeological remains. It is recommended that six sites (Historic Locations 24 (Belle Chance), 40, 43, 44, 51, and 55) be protected from any potential ground disturbing activities. Further archaeological testing is necessary to fully evaluate their potential for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (National Register). Evidence from the remaining five sites (Historic Locations 36, 52, 54, 56, and 57) did not appear to warrant further testing, as they are not considered to be eligible for the National Register.
