Author(s): Daniel J. O'Rourke; Stephen Sennott; Thomas Chiodini; Andrew Orr; Lynn Gierek
Year: 2020
Summary
Argonne National Laboratory conducted a historic building inventory and evaluation on behalf of the United States Air Force at Joint Base Andrews, Camp Springs, Prince George's County, Maryland. The survey examined 52 structures and facilities and evaluated three types of buildings and structures, including four large hangars, three of which are associated with the Air Force One Maintenance and Support Complex (also known as the Presidential Air Group); four pre-base nonmilitary historic structures and landscape features associated with the “Belle Chance” area (former pre-base nonmilitary structures) of the base; and 44 mission support facilities and base operations buildings. The survey identified five resources that are recommended as eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, including three distinctive presidential hangars (Hangars 3, 6, and 19) and the passenger terminal, which have been a symbolic location for historically significant events associated with the duties of the Presidents of the United States from 1961 to the present. The fifth building is the family cemetery at Belle Chance, eligible because of its association with the original plantation.
