Summary

In September 1995, the Environmental Management Office at Edwards Air Force Base (AFB) tasked Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) to install and field test the prototype HIPROTECT II remote monitoring system. The name HIPROTECT stands for Human Intrusion Detection/Response System for the Protection of Cultural and Natural Resources. The HIPROTECT testing was designed to provide 24-hour protection of the Lansford Adobe at site CA-LAN-1386H. Site CA-LAN-1386H is two adjacent homesites, the Lansford and Bacon-Darr adobes, located in the south-central region of Edwards AFB, California.

This demonstration project was funded by the Department of Defense Legacy Resource Management Program to assist the Air Force's efforts to protect cultural resources sites. This document describes the attempt to deploy the system at the Landsford Adobe site and the history of the HIPROTECT system including system deployed at Fort Benning military reservation in Georgia and Joshua Tree National Park in California. This document also evaluates the HIPROTECT system as a means of providing effective 24-hour protection to cultural resources in remote locations.
