Burial Practices: A Means to Identify Prehistoric Ethnic Groups at Edwards AFB, California (Final)

Author(s): Mark M. Campbell; David D. Earle; Barry Boyer

Year: 1997

Summary

The purpose of the study was to attempt to identify characteristics which could be used to identify the ethnicity or cultural affiliation of human remains encountered in the archaeological record. Such "ethnic markers," should they be identified, could aid the Air Force in its efforts to comply with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, the National Historic Preservation Act, and Air Force Instruction. 32-7065, Cultural Resources Management. These "ethnic markers" could enable the Air Force to more accurately identify which Native American groups with whom it should initiate consultation when and if Native American human remains and/ or associated grave goods are encountered at Edwards AFB.
