Summary
This report present the results of a literature and records search and field reconnaissance conducted on Gunter Air Force Station and Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery. This research was conducted as a component of preparation of a master plan for each facility.
Research and field work conducted at Gunter Air Force Station indicated that no archaeological resources had been previously identified there, and that the base had been overbuilt to the point that it was unlikely that any archaeological resources could have survived in situ. No archaeologically sensitive areas were noted at Gunter.
Maxwell Air Force base was found to contain five previously identified prehistoric archaeological sites. The field reconnaissance brought that total to six. The archaeological sites present contained Archaic, Woodland, Mississippian, and possibly historic Indian components, and included the assumed site of the Alibamu town of Tawassa. Four archaeological sensitive areas and zones were identified at Maxwell that will require intensive archaeological survey prior to any future construction.
