Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, Historic Building Maintenance Plan, Final Report
Author(s): Bruce G. Harvey; Guy Weaver; Eric C. Poplin
Year: 1999
Summary
Brockington and Associates, Inc., has prepared this Building Maintenance Plan (BMP) for Maxwell Air Force Base (AFB) and Gunter Annex in conjunction with a Cultural Resources Management Plan (CRMP). The purpose of the CRMP is to provide general guidelines which officials at Maxwell AFB can use in complying with Federal and Department of Defense (DoD) regulations regarding the care of cultural resources, including architectural, archaeological, and literary properties. The Building Maintenance Plan, by contrast, provides more specific information on how to treat historically significant buildings so as to retain and/or restore their integrity. Previous recording activities at Maxwell AFB resulted in three nominations to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1988. The Senior Officers' Quarters (SOQ) were listed as a district, while Facilities 800 and 836 were listed individually. A more recent survey (McMakin et al. 1997) identified all buildings and structures associated with the Cold War, and recommended that none be eligible for the NRHP under current United States Air Force (USAF) interim guidelines (Green 1993). Until recently, however, the remaining facilities at Maxwell AFB and Gunter Annex dating from 1928 to 1950 had not been surveyed. Thorough documentation and evaluation of the Base's historic architecture is the foundation of this BMP.
