Summary

A cultural resource assessment of prehistoric and historic resources was conducted for Vance Air Force Base on July 12-14, 1993. The assessment was part of the cultural resource archeological baseline survey requested by Headquarters Air Education and Training Command. The assessment included an archeological reconnaissance, survey of Vance Air Force Base, an archeological reconnaissance survey of Kegelman Auxiliary Field, and identification of buildings and structures built between 1942 and 1950, on the base and at the field. The base contains 1818.67 hectares (4,494 acres) which were inspected during the reconnaissance level survey. No archeological resources were identified, although two small concrete pads were noted; one within the main base proper and one along the west side of the runway system. The base also contains 391 buildings and structures. Of these, 4 permanent facilities, 25 semi-permanent facilities, and 12 temporary facilities were constructed between 1942 and 1950. Based on the amount of disturbance, no further archeological work is recommended for Vance Air Force Base. At Kegelman Auxiliary Field, an archeological assessment indicated that the field has a moderate to high potential of having archeological resources, and that, a full archeological survey of the 398.62 hectare (985 acre) field should be conducted in order to identify and evaluate any archeological resources within the boundary of the field. The field also has one structure built in 1B43. It is also recommended that a historical structures inventory and evaluation, Cultural Resource Management Plan, National Register of Historic Places nomination, and a Programmatic Agreement be completed for the 30 buildings identified from the base's Real Property Inventory records as permanent or semi-permanent facilities.
