Vance Air Force Base: Cold War-Era Buildings and Structures Inventory and Assessment
Year: 2003
Summary
This report provides an inventory and assessment of the Cold War-era (1945-1991) built environment at Vance Air Force Base (AFB), Oklahoma. Geo-Marine, Inc., conducted this work to assist the United States Air Force, Air Education and Training Command in fulfilling its responsibilities under Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended through 2000.
Most of the buildings constructed during the reactivation of Vance AFB in the early 1950s have been renovated to the point that they no longer retain their architectural integrity. A review of the historic documents at the base and an investigation into the 619 Cold War-era buildings and structures determined that, although some of the flying training buildings at the base are associated with the base’s Cold War missions, none of the buildings or structures have a direct, significant connection or they do not convey their mission. Therefore, none of the Cold War-era resources at Vance AFB were further assessed, and none are considered eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places due to the inability to meet the exceptional level of Cold War significance required for resources under 50 years of age.
