Field Summary of an Archaeological Survey of Laughlin Air Force Base, Del Rio, Texas

Summary

From April 12 through May 27, 1994, staff archaeologists for the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) of The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted a pedestrian archaeological survey of Laughlin Air Force Base (AFB) and the Air Force Recreation Area and Marina, in southeastern Val Verde County, Texas. The objectives of this project were to: (1) conduct a baseline, 100 percent pedestrian survey of approximately 2,855 acres within Laughlin AFB and the Air Force Recreation Area and Marina to locate and record cultural resources; (2) conduct a thorough literature and archival review to determine the probable nature and distribution of cultural and natural resources within the project area; (3) present a formal research design that would serve as the basis for the field survey and subsequent evaluations of site significance; (4) provide historic contexts reflective of potential area resources which will serve as the basis for National Register of Historic Places prehistoric and/or historic property evaluations; (5) review the literature and conduct limited field work of paleontological resources within the project area; and (6) review the literature and conduct limited fieldwork of the geomorphology of the project area. The objective of the archaeological baseline survey is to assist the U.S. Air Force in meeting their responsibilities under federal cultural resource laws and mandates.
