An Archaeological Assessment of Luke Air Force Range Located in Southwestern Arizona

Author(s): Carole McClellan; Lawrence Vogler

Year: 1977

Summary

In February 1977, the Arizona State Museum was contracted by Luke Air Force Base to provide an assessment of cultural resources, archaeological and historical, for the area known as the Luke Air Force Range which contains approximately 2.7 million acres located in southwestern Arizona. A records and literature search was conducted primarily by two researchers working part-time from mid-February through mid-May. This resulted in a description of cultural resources known to exist, an assessment of known and probable impacts, and research potential and priorities. Recommendations for future research to be conducted within Luke Air Force Range, including the development of a sampling design and estimated costs, were made. It was concluded that existing information on cultural resources is inadequate to assess the nature, quantity, distribution, and significance of cultural resources within Luke Air Force Range.
