Tyndall Air Force Base, Inventory and Assessment of Cold War-Era Buildings Constructed Between 1956 and 1991, Volume I

Year: 2010

Summary

This report provides an inventory and assessment of Cold War-era buildings built between 1956 and 1991 at Tyndall Air Force Base (AFB), Florida. A previous study evaluated resources built during World War II through 1955 at Tyndall AFB.

Of the 613 Cold War-era buildings and structures built between 1956 and 1991 on Tyndall AFB’s current real property listing, a total of 132 resources were chosen for investigation. Eliminated from the survey were infrastructural resources such as roads, fences, sidewalks, taxiways, as well as common base operations and support facilities and those buildings covered under program comments issued by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP). Of the 132 buildings inventoried, 40 were constructed between 1956 and 1960, making them at least 50 years of age and potentially eligible for inclusion in the NRHP under the standard Criteria A-D. The remaining 92 buildings were built between 1961 and 1991. As resources less than 50 years of age, they must meet the stricter criterion of exceptional importance under Criterion Consideration G in addition to the standard criteria to be NRHP eligible.
