Sheppard Air Force Base: Inventory and Assessment of Select Buildings and Structures (Dating through 1976)

Summary

This report provides an inventory and assessment of select resources constructed through 1976 at Sheppard Air Force Base (AFB), which includes the Sheppard Main Base (SMB), the Sheppard Recreation Annex (SRA), and a portion of the Frederick Municipal Airport (FMA).

Three-hundred-sixteen (316) resources were initially identified on the real property list as buildings, structures, or infrastructure constructed through 1976 that were unevaluated or in need of evaluation under the standard NRHP criteria. A large number, however, were eliminated from consideration upon consultation with AETC. Resources were eliminated for one of the following reasons: (1) they represent common support buildings, structures, or equipment with little or no building footprint (e.g., bus shelters, distribution lines, athletic fields, etc.) that do not hold any potential for historic significance based on their role or function within a military context; (2) they had been demolished since the last update of real property records; (3) they are covered under a program comment, and thus, no further Section 106 coordination would be required; or (4) they are no longer owned by the Department of Defense (DoD). The remaining 133 resources constructed through 1976 had never been evaluated or had failed to meet the requirement of significance under Criterion Consideration G, but as resources now 50 years of age or older, are in need of re-evaluation. None is recommended eligible for listing in the NRHP under the standard criteria or Criterion Consideration G for properties still less than 50 years of age.
