Cultural Resource Assessment of Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita County, Texas

Author(s): Steven De Vore

Year: 1993

Summary

A cultural resource assessment of prehistoric and historic resources was conducted for Sheppard Air Force Base on July 14-16, 1993. The assessment was part of cultural resource archeological baseline survey requested by Headquarters Air Education and Training Command. The assessment included an archeological reconnaissance survey of the base and identification of buildings and structures built between 1928 and 1950.

The base contains 5,056 acres which were inspected during the reconnaissance level survey. No archeological resources were identified. The base also contains 1,493 facilities including 1,159 buildings and structures. Of these, 19 permanent facilities, 54 semi-permanent facilities, and 18 auxiliary facilities were constructed between 1928 and 1950. Approximately six buildings were constructed in 1928 as part of the original Wichita Falls Municipal Airport (Kell Field). The Kell Field Air Terminal Building (Fae. No. 2130) was recorded as a Texas Historic Landmark in 1981. Based on the lack of archeological resources, no further archeological work is recommended. It is recommended that a historical structures inventory and evaluation, Cultural Resource Management Plan, National Register of Historic Places nomination, and Programmatic Agreement be completed for the 74 buildings identified from the base's Real Property Inventory records.
