Summary

This report presents the results of an intensive survey of the Sheppard Air Force Base Recreation Area (SAFBRA) a 450-acre tract of land along the south shore of Lake Texoma in Grayson County, Texas. The objective of the study was to document and provide a preliminary assessment of all cultural resource sites within the SAFBRA property.

The study. consisting of a literature and records review and intensive pedestrian survey, resulted in the recognition of two previously recorded sites (41GS26 and 41GS115) and the recording of two localities. It was discovered that the two previously recorded sites are presently located beneath the conservation pool (617' amsl) of Lake Texoma and are not accessible. The two localities. each consisting of a single flake, are by definition ineligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

Although examination of topographic and soils maps suggested that SAFBRA might be located on a Holocene terrace, field investigations of erosional cuts and the shoreline revealed massive clay deposits which are most likely Pleistocene in age. Consequently, the potential for deeply buried cultural deposits is considered to be low. It was also recognized that the entire project area bas been impacted by previous developments and that little topsoil remains. Accordingly, it is recommended that the U.S. Air Force may use and develop SAFBRA without further consideration of cultural resources.
