Archaeological Investigations at the Cape Cod Air Force Station in Bourne, Massachusetts

Summary

Archaeological investigations were conducted at the Cape Cod Air Force Station (CCAFS) in Bourne, Massachusetts to identify areas within the boundaries of the CCAFS that were sensitive for the presence of archaeological remains. The intensive survey was conducted at the location of a new water well water supply pipeline, and water storage tank. The results of the cultural reconnaissance survey determined that because of rugged terrain and the scarcity of existing or past water resources on or near the CCAFS property the archaeological potential for the presence of prehistoric sites was low. No evidence of significant historical sites was found. The 'Technical Facility' building at the center of the property and within the high-security fenced compound, however, has been determined by the United States Air Force to be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places under the Cold War context. For the intensive survey of the proposed water supply facilities, a total of 15 shovel test pits was excavated. A small amount of recent historical material was recovered. This material was not associated with any historical features or structures and was of such recent nature that it was not considered to be archaeologically significant. No prehistoric cultural material was recovered from any of the shovel test pits. No further archaeological investigations were recommended for the construction areas for the new water well, water supply pipeline, and water supply tank.
