Historic Context Study of the Salt River Irrigation System, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, Maricopa County, Arizona

Author(s): Pat H. Stein

Year: 2002

Summary

The United States Congress has directed the Western Regional Office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) to transfer ownership of the property known as the Salt River Irrigation System to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC). Prior to the transfer, the BIA must consult with the Arizona State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and codified at 36 CFR 800.

This historic context study is intended to facilitate the consultation process. The study describes the events, historic trends, people, and technology involved in the irrigation system's construction and maintenance through time. It provides the BIA and the SHPO with information to help determine (a) the property's eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places and (b) the effect of the property's transfer to the SRPMIC.
