Summary

This annotated bibliography was prepared as part of an project sponsored by the Bureau of Reclamation to document ethnographic information relating to ten tribes claiming cultural affiliation with the Uinta and Great Salt Lake variants of the northern Fremont archaeological culture. The research documents existing anthropological information pertinent to the implementation of Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). At the outset of the project, nine tribes claimed affiliation: the Hopi Tribe, Kaibab Paiute Tribe, Northern Ute Indian Tribe, Northwest Band of Shoshone, Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah, Pueblo of Laguna, Pueblo of Nambe, Pueblo of Zia, and Pueblo of Zuni. During the course of the research, the Skull Valley Band of Goshute Indians stated its intention to claim Northern Fremont remains and cultural items, and was subsequently included in the research.

The ethnographic study of Uinta and Great Salt Lake Fremont cultural affiliation is based on a review of published anthropological literature relating to four of the ten lines of evidence specified in NAGPRA: geography, anthropology, folklore, and oral tradition. This annotated bibliography accompanies a narrative report summarizing these four lines of evidence. The other lines of evidence specified in NAGPRA are the subject of additional reports prepared for the Bureau of Reclamation by specialists in those areas.
