Author(s): Floyd R. Mansberger; Christopher Stratton

Year: 2023

Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Paper / Report Submission (General Sessions)", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

This paper builds on the historic context and project history presented in the earlier paper by Christopher Stratton, and describes the results of the archaeological mitigation conducted on four city lots occupied by Portuguese immigrants in Springfield (Illinois) beginning in the 1850s and continuing through the early years of the twentieth century. The paper summarizes the various features uncovered during the excavations, as well as the breadth of the artifacts discarded by the families over multiple generations, and discusses the results of the investigations in terms of the original research questions regarding the potential visibility of the Portuguese immigrants (and their cultural heritage) in the archaeological record and the rate of their acculturation in Midwestern urban society.
