Preservation of Underwater archaeological sites on Mozambique Island

Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Paper / Report Submission (General Sessions)", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

Over the last years, the Mozambique coast has been affected by several cyclones and tropical depression that directly affect the Maritime and Cultural Heritage (MUCH), especially in the northern of the country. In order to deal with underwater site degradations, previous projects conducted over this heritage attempted to mitigate natural and human impacts which results will be analysed here. Among number of underwater sites sitting on Mozambique Island waters, emphasis will be given to the site IDM016, which is fully exposed, however the preservation condition is good, when compared to IDM006 that is covered by some ballast pile, but preservation is challenging. Initial results have revealed that, in some conditions, the underwater archaeological sites doesn't need mitigation strategies, because the environment where they are located provide favourable conditions for stabilization. Thus, this research, intends to assess the in situ preservation condition on IDM006 and IDM016 by analysing the environmental condition.
