Port de Pomègues 4, a lead sheathed ibero-atlantic vessel (Marseilles, France)

Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Paper / Report Submission (General Sessions)", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

The Port de Pomègues 4 wreck is characterized by the port side stern of a ship estimated to be about twenty meters long. The remains of this oak hull sheathed with lead sheets lie at a depth of 4 m on the northern coast of the island of Pomègues in the Rade de Marseille (France), a shelter dedicated to the anchorage of ships in quarantine.

The absence of artefact and dendrochronological results do not allow us to propose an absolute dating. Tanks to the sheathing, a chronological range can be advanced between the 16th and 17th centuries. In addition, several clues (assembly of transverse structures, shape of the keelson, shell shocks...) help to place the remains of this hull within the Iberian-Atlantic shipbuilding tradition. These various elements are able of evoking the maritim trade between the Iberian Peninsula and the Eastern Mediterranean via the port of Marseille in modern times.
