Summary
This is a poster submission presented at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
A 2018 study of Northwest Florida’s cultural and natural resources, conducted by the University of West’s Florida Public Archaeology Network, revealed that the area encompasses numerous sites and entities that are significant to understanding the maritime history and cultural landscape of the region. It also highlighted the inadequate level of attention to these resources which has prevented the area from maximizing their use. The Northwest Florida Maritime Landscape Alliance for Preservation, Inc. is a nonprofit founded in 2020, as a coalition of organizations and individual stakeholders interested in maximizing the benefit of these resources through preservation. The nonprofit seeks to educate and inspire residents and visitors, facilitate grassroots collaboration between natural and cultural assets, and continue the path towards designation as a National Heritage Area (NHA). NHAs are places where historic, cultural, and natural resources combine to form lived in, nationally significant landscapes preserved through grassroots initiatives.
