10-Years of Sustainable Partnership at a Glance: Youth Diving with a Purpose and the National Park Service

This is a poster submission presented at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

In 2011 Youth Diving with a Purpose (YDWP) and the NPS partnered to create a sustainable pathway for Black youth to enter the field of maritime archaeology. In the summer of 2021, we represented YDWP as interns to continue this partnership through the ongoing search for the Guerrero. The Guerrero was a ship carrying illegally enslaved Africans to be sold in Cuba that ran aground within the current boundaries of Biscayne National Park. We investigated anomalies that might point to the resting place of both the vessel and the individuals that drowned upon its wrecking. Additionally, we mentored Black and Latinx youth in maritime archaeological techniques during their one-week training program. Fostering the relationship between YDWP and NPS to preserve this legacy is of the utmost importance not just to growing Black and Latinx representation in archaeology but also to the future of archaeology as a discipline.
