Kaše Breakwater - The Symbol Of The Old Port of Dubrovnik (Ragusa)

Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Early Modern Seaports in the Context of Global Cities Emergency. Harbour, Maritime and Landscape Archaeology", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

At the peak of the development of Maritime Republic of Ragusa, at the end of the 15th century, the Port of Dubrovnik (Ragusa) gained its present appearance with the construction of the Kaše breakwater. Within the project APPRODI (Interreg ADRION), for the first time the underwater archaeological research was conducted, accompanied by geophysical survey and geological coring. In addition, a historical research was conducted at the State Archives in Dubrovnik, during which all known documents illustrating the development of the breakwater were reviewed, and some new were discovered. Based on the results of historical, iconographic and archaeological research, the phases of its construction have been proposed, somewhat different from the already published ones. Although the breakwater greatly contributed to the protection of one of the most important Adriatic ports at that time, it was rebuilt several times, after the destructions caused by the weather conditions.
