Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Digital Approaches in Nautical Archaeology", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
With digital technologies for the documentation, reconstruction and analysis of archaeological boat and ship finds becoming the norm, this presentation examines those processes from the viewpoint of a shipbuilder and seafarer. It will examine what information is being documented and recorded. How that information is being interpreted and digitally manipulated to create a hypothesis and how that hypothesis is tested to verify its tenacity.
It is possible to recreate any object from our physical world as a three-dimensional digital object, a “digital twin”, however, the converse is not always true. It is also possible to create a digital object which cannot be replicated in the physical world. The issue for a digital workflow is remaining in the realms of what is physically possible. And once completed to arrive at a publication and dissemination format which not only presents a pretty 3D model, but also includes the workflow and processes involved.
