Laser Scanning Vs Photogrammetric Survey In Maritime Archaeology

Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Digital Approaches in Nautical Archaeology", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

The paper describes an operational working methodology to survey wooden artifacts in maritime archaeology, using photogrammetry and hand-held 3D laser scanning. These digital techniques are widely employed for a non-contact approach to the documentation of artifacts, due to their high-resolution and high-accuracy 3d recordings, which allow the archaeologists to survey, monitor, and study maritime cultural heritage.

The two techniques have been applied for the documentation of sewn planks of Roman boats (from 50 cm to 8 m) and a brig rudder of the 19th century (6.5 m). The paper wants to compare points clouds with a set of values inside a range of 2 mm, connected with the nominal scale 1:10, analysing the accuracy and the completeness of the documentation obtained with different hardware, with their own advantages and limitations (Nikon reflex, GoPro, Artec Eva laser scan).
