Steel And Steam At The Entrance Of The River Tagus.A Different Reality And New Fields Of Research

Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Lisbon, The Tagus And The Global Navigation", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

Traditionally, Portugal, and Lisbon, are mainly linked with the Age of Discoveries, and Portuguese scholars tend to forget the sea tragedies that occurred in the contemporary period, including those during the World Wars. Strangely, information about those recent disasters and their “cultural footprint”, has proven difficult to find.

To change the above situation, in 2013, a team of researchers, including naval historians and underwater archaeologists based in Cascais, started to look more deeply at this period, mainly those linked with world conflicts. And, surprisingly or not, several new contemporary shipwrecks have been found, although only a few of them have been identified. This reality has the potential for new fields of research and joint studies with other sciences is immense, particularly a more efficient articulation with geophysical studies that help identify and characterise sites of interest.

This presentation will present our work's current situation and future aims.
