Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Lisbon, The Tagus And The Global Navigation", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

In the 1960s, a set of bronze cannons was discovered by an amateur diver in the Cabo Raso area of Cascais. In the years that followed, the archaeological site was the target of several "well-intentioned" lootings or recoveries. It was only in the 1980s that pioneering underwater archaeological work was carried out, promoted by the Museu do Mar de Cascais. More recently, historical research identifies the wreck of the Florentine ship "Gran Principessa di Toscana", which sank there in 1696.

The present work is based on the research developed in the Master's thesis. This study focuses on the materials and documentation available about the wreck, trying to deepen our knowledge about the underwater archaeological heritage of Cabo Raso, Cascais, through the study of this wreck. The material culture consists mainly of artillery, ammunition and artifacts of daily use.
