Campo das Cebolas nautical contexts. Study results

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Lisbon, The Tagus And The Global Navigation", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

Between 2016-20017 the archeological intervention in Campo das Cebolas, in Lisbon, revealed the remains of 8 Tagus river traditional boats from the 19th century.

After the intervention all timbers were maintained in tanks with appropriate conservation environmental conditions. In 2020, during pandemic quarantine a team of four nautical archaeologists were uncharged of an intensive inventory and study intervention. Each context was then recorded and studied. In total were analyzed and studied 906 pieces of all contexts.

Each context revealed unique shipbuilding particularities, revealing the different construction methods of shipyards that served Tagus River. With the acronym NCC and numbered from 1 to 8, the context NCC1 revealed a particular characteristic, being robust and carefully constructed. The data seems to show that it belonged to a shuttle boat, which indicates a possible context outside Tagus traditional boats. In this talk we will present all the first results, analyzing the eight contexts.
