Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "FoodCult: Food, Culture and Identity in Ireland, c.1550-1650", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
This paper will examine the consumption of meat and dairy products in early modern Ireland from a zooarchaeological perspective. It will present preliminary results from the interdisciplinary FoodCult project, which is exploring the diet and foodways of diverse communities in early modern Ireland. Meat has always been an integral part of the diet of people in Ireland, but little attention has been paid to the way in which the types and quantities vary by such factors as geographical location, site type, site status, and ethnicity. Furthermore, while the historical importance of dairy products for certain social groups has been noted in both historical and archaeological literature, this has rarely been examined quantitatively, and, even more rarely in an early modern context.
