Captain, Sailors and Ship : Archival Research Serving Study of the Anémone's Site

Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Anémone Project Les Saintes (Guadeloupe) : Result of the first multi-year underwater archaeological excavation in the French West Indies 2015-2019", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

During excavations realized on this wreck, archival research proved to be preponderant for ship identification, as archives were collated with in situ observation to identify clearly the remains. Comparing them with the results of the excavation not only allowed to compare theory of the plans with reality of use, but also permitted to identify very clearly some unexplicit artifacts.

Moreover, in the case of the Anémone, rich and precise sources could give shape, substance to the campaign of excavation, as they supplemented it with a context, contributing towards a better exploitation of the results of the excavation : captain’s biography, muster roll, mariners’ recordkeeping, accounts and minutes, by giving context to the shipwreck, and reconstruct the human adventure it happened to be.
