Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Cultural Heritage During Crises: Crime, Conflict, and Climate Change", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
In the past decade, the scope of heritage crime as a global research field has developed significantly. The term has increased in usage, and the crimes that it has been used to describe have also diversified. In this paper I consider the issue of heritage crime in rural areas, considering the diversity not only of what can count as crime, taking a zemiological, or harm-based approach, covering not only legally-defined crimes, but also broader destruction and damage of heritage and impact on rural communities. I consider both cultural and natural aspects of heritage as it relates to rural spaces, and also acknowledge intangible elements with a direct impact on ways of life and ways of understanding the world. This paper represents the beginnings of a new direction of research for me, and I hope to open up the debate on this fascinating, diverse and urgent sub-field of heritage studies.
