In Transition: The Collections and Veterans of the VCP

Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Pre-Recorded Video Presentation Paper / Report Submission (General Sessions)", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

The Veterans Curation Program (VCP) is both a temporary employment program for veterans and an interim repository for archaeological collections while they undergo rehabilitation. During each session, veteran technicians help care for at-risk artifact and associated archival collections from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). These collections arrive at the VCP facilities from various USACE districts across the country, and each comes with its own challenges in terms of preservation and stewardship. Likewise, the veterans who go through the program come from varied backgrounds, each working toward unique personal and professional goals. This paper provides an overview of both the VCP collections rehabilitation process and the professional support veterans in the program receive each session. Through this work, the VCP becomes a productive transitional space for both archaeological collections and the individuals who help care for them.
