Archaeology: Antarctica and Outer Space

Author(s): Bryan Lintott

Year: 2023

Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Pre-Recorded Video Presentation Things and the Global Antarctica", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

The mythos of Antarctica and Outer Space is imbued with an aura of adventure and association with iconic figures of exploration and science that have influenced public discourses and political decisions. Beyond these tropes in the public domain are hard geospatial-geopolitical considerations, complex logistics, advanced technologies and robust archaeological professional standards and practices, and environmental concerns. In recent years, the International Council of Monuments and Sites´ International Polar Heritage Committee (ICOMOS IPHC) has developed Antarctic Archaeology Guidelines to inform Antarctic nations, their respective national programmes and others associated with Antarctica. In 2022, an ICOMOS Task Force on AeroSpace Heritage was established with experts on archaeology and heritage beyond the Earth and associated terrestrial sites. The presenter, who is engaged with both of these endeavours, will review how these endeavours are developing and consider the emerging challenges and opportunities.
