Author(s): Richard E. Greenwood
Year: 1975
Summary
This is the original, signed National Register of Historic Places nomination form for Hangar #1 in Lakehurst's Lighter-Than-Air Historic District. Hangar No. 1 is a 961ft-long, 200ft-high, 350ft-wide, steel arch hangar built in 1921 to house U.S. Navy dirigibles. Two pairs of massive steel doors, mounted on railroad tracks, cover the west and east ends of the hangar and are structurally separate from the hangar itself. Each door weighs 1350 tons and is powered by two twenty horsepower motors. Hangar #1 served as the primary hangar for international airship flights and was the site of the German Zeppelin Hindenburg airship crash in 1937.
