Plan of Work - Archaeological Testing - Avenue between Broadway Road and the GRIC Boundary - Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona

Summary

This document presents the Plan of Work submitted by Statistical Research, Inc. (SRl) to the Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) for archaeological testing along 51st Avenue between Broadway and the Gila River Indian Community (GRIC) boundary (Project No. 68943) in Phoenix. Maricopa County (Figure 1). A previous archaeological survey by Dames and Moore (Shepard and Rogge 1997) located a single archaeological site within the project area. Early research by Frank Midvale (1966), Herbert Patrick (1903), and Omar Tumey (1929), however, (see also Aguila 1997; Howard and Huckleberry 1991) reveals that several major canals cross the project area (Figure 2), These include Canal Laveen, the South Branch of Canal Laveen, and Canal Primero. A historical period canal, the Leon Canal is also believed to cross the project area. Several large prehistoric settlements are also located in the vicinity of the project area. No surface evidence of these canal features is visible today within the project area, although modem landscaping, pavement, and crops in cultivated fields severely limit visibility. The purpose of the proposed archaeological investigations is to determine if these or other canals or associated agricultural features occur within the project area, and to evaluate their significance.
