The Air Force Special Weapons Complex Cultural Resources Survey White Sands Missile Range, Socorro County, New Mexico

Part of the Holloman Air Force Base Resources project

Year: 1996

Summary

The three newly recorded sites are prehistoric in nature, and consist of low density scatters of chipped stone, ground stone, and fire-cracked rock fragments. LA 110414 contained a single projectile point fragment which suggests a Late Archaic/early Formative affiliation. The remaining two sites are temporally and culturally unknown. Compared to similar previously recorded prehistoric sites in the general region, these sites appear to represent short-term, logistical resource procurement and processing locations. The previously recorded site (LA 80536) is an historic ranching complex consisting of a wire corral, water troughs, a well, and an artifact scatter which appears to date between approximately 1912 and 1945. These types of historic ranching related features are a common phenomenon among late Historic Period sites recorded in the area.
