Oscura Gunnery and Bombing Range Cultural Resources Survey White Sands Missile Range, Lincoln County, New Mexico

Part of the Holloman Air Force Base Resources project

Year: 1997

Summary

A total of 15 previously unrecorded archaeological sites (LA 111304 - LA 111317, LA 111442) and 151 isolated occurrences were encountered and recorded during this survey. In addition, five previously recorded sites (LA 86477 - LA 86479, LA 60700, LA 60701) were identified and updated where necessary (only LA 60700 required updating). These recorded sites and isolated occurrences represent both prehistoric and historic utilization of the Oscura Range area. The prehistoric sites and isolates appear to represent short-term resource procurement locales and temporally span the Paleo-Indian through Formative periods. The historic resources documented during this survey represent limited use of the area for ranching, homesteading, and

military related activities. These resources represent historic utilization of the area from the 1880s to the 1950s.
