VAFB-1982-10: Union Oil Company of California Seismic Test Monitoring Program Vandenberg Air Force Base, Santa Barbara County, California

Author(s): WESTEC Services

Year: 1982

Summary

A biological and cultural resource monitoring program on VAFB, in conjunction with a seismic survey conducted on behalf of the Union Oil Company. The seismic survey represents a minor variation on a previously completed study (WESTEC 1981). These variations include changes in auger hole depth and frequency, and the use of minisocie vibrating device, did not appreciably alter the anticipated impacts on biological or cultural resources.

During the monitoring program, three previously unrecorded archaeological sites were discovered within or near the 15 meter wide corridor. The first site (VZ-1/SBA-1760) was found in previously unsurveyed area after the vegetation had been cleared for drilling. The associated shot site was relocated to avoid impacts. The other two sites (VN-1/SBA-1764, VN-2/SBA-1763) were not within the seismic corridor, discovered while searching for suitable helicopter landing areas. Two isolated bifaces and a single lipped Olivella bead were also identified within the testing corridor and collected following mapping to avoid loss or damage during testing.
