VAFB-1984-13: Results of Archaeological Subsurface Testing at SBA-775 for the V-17 Visual Landing Aids North 6500 Foot Papi Lights, VAFB, CA

Summary

This documents describes that an archaeological surface survey was conducted in the vicinity of the proposed V-17 Visual Landing Aids Project's construction of Papi lights at the 6500 foot marker north of the VAFB runway. Two previously recorded archaeological sites (CA-SBA-775 and 776) were noted adjacent to the proposed project area. This report summarizes the results of subsurface testing for the 100x200 foot area that could potentially impact these two sites.

Based on a series of 19 shovel test units excavated in the vicinity of the 6500 foot area north of the existing runway, a number of very small chert flakes were recovered. These chert flakes do not appear to represent primary depositional material and probably are the result of displaced cultural materials through military maneuvers in the vicinity or wind blown redeposited cultural materials. It is determined that the Papi Light Project at the 6500 foot marker can proceed as planned.
