Summary

This document is a report that presents the results of an archaeological investigation for the North Vandenberg, Lions Head, and CITS Fiber-Optic Cable Systems Project on Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. Limited testing at 12 archaeological sites within the project area found no intact cultural deposits, although artifacts were found at 6 of the sites in disturbed contexts.

More extensive testing was carried out at CA-SBA-3036 to evaluate the site for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Due to the absence of significant cultural deposits and the substantial impairment of site integrity, Applied EarthWorks, Inc. recommended CA-SBA-3036 not eligible for listing in the NRHP.

As a result of this study, Applied EarthWorks, Inc. stated that the installation of the fiber-optic cable would not adversely affect any of the tested sites due to the paucity of artifacts as well as the lack of integrity of site soils. However, monitoring by an archaeologist and Native American was recommended during cable installation at each site.
