VAFB-1986-12: Cultural Resources Survey, Proposed Airport Control Tower (P.N. 84014), Vandenberg Air Force Base, California

Author(s): Army Corp of Engineers

Year: 1986

Summary

In August 1986, an archaeologist from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Sacramento District, conducted an intensive pedestrian survey of approximately 40 acres surrounding the U.S. Air Force's proposed control tower location on Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. The survey was conducted to determine what effects, if any, construction of the proposed facility would have on cultural resources. The survey revealed only a substantially altered roadway that may correspond to a historic period travelway/trail. No other cultural materials were encountered. Based on the available information, it does not appear that the encountered feature is available for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. Therefore, this project will have no effect on National Register listed or eligible properties. It is, however, recommended that if previously undiscovered cultural properties are encountered during the course of project implementation, that construction activities in that specific locality be halted until the requirements of 36 CRF 800.11 can be met.
