Testing Plan for a Portion of the Southwest Germann Site, AZ U:10:2 (ASM): The SRP Rohrig Substation, Queen Creek, Maricopa County, Arizona

Summary

The following testing plan is presented for conducting Phase I data recovery within a portion of AZ U:10:2 (ASM), the Southwest Germann Site, a National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)-eligible prehistoric site situated near the intersection of Sossaman and Rittenhouse Roads in the town of Queen Creek, Arizona (Figure 1). Salt River Project (SRP) plans to construct a substation within a rectangular shaped, 310- by 360-foot area within the SW¼, SW¼, SW¼, NW¼ of Section 8, Township 2 South, Range 7 East (USGS Higley, Ariz. 7.5' 1956/1981). The 2.5-acre Rohrig substation parcel (Parcel) is located at the northeast corner of Sossaman and Ryan Roads within an undeveloped, but disturbed segment of privately owned land.

The testing plan is consistent with the stipulations of the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Archaeological Documentation (Federal Register, 49 FR 44734-37) and takes into account the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation's publication, Treatment of Archaeological Properties (1980). The testing plan includes an overview of the prehistoric cultural development in the eastern Phoenix Basin, and a work plan specifying the Phase I testing strategy and methods to be employed. Analytical methods that will be used to evaluate the recovered site data and artifacts are also presented. The work plan provides a schedule for the preparation of the Phase I testing report, which will document the findings and provide recommendations for any Phase II data recovery.
