Summary
The focus of this Santa Fe conference was to develop effective strategies that streamline the historic preservation review process mandated by Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The conference participants shared information on current practices and technologies and, more importantly, made recommendations on how to reach a common objective. The objective was to develop effective strategies to enhance and streamline the historic preservation review process mandated by Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Implementation of any strategies identified by the conference participants should result in the most efficient use of agency personnel and funding, and lead to improvements in both historic preservation efforts and the delivery of transportation projects. The conference did not examine or make recommendations on changing current historic preservation or transportation laws and regulations, but rather focused on best practices for working within the current regulatory and statutory structure.
