Cultural Resource Survey of U.S. Naval Reservation Bloodsworth Island Dorchester County, Maryland

Summary

Report Abstract:

This report presents the methods and results of a cultural resource survey of the U. S. Naval Reservation, Bloodsworth Island, Maryland. The survey and accompanying archival investigations were designed to identify and provide an evaluation of all historic and prehistoric cultural resources within project boundaries, and to recommend appropriate management measures.

Prior to the field survey, an archival investigation was conducted to provide information on cultural resource locations within project boundaries as well as information on the environment, prehistory and history of the region. This research included informant interviews, as well as the study of early maps and land records.

As a result of this survey, four historic archeological sites, and 46 historic and one prehistoric artifact find spots were located. Three of the historic sites were felt to be potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Further investigations sufficient to confirm the National Register eligibility of these sites is recommended. Additional work is also recommended in the vicinity of two groups of artifact find spots in order to determine if potentially significant in-situ remains are present. Finally, two "sensitive zones" were recommended to protect identified resources. The extent of these zones may be reduced upon completion of the recommended investigations.
