Summary
This is the tDAR document page that represents Reports of Investigation 122 from the Applied Anthropology Laboratories, Ball State University. The Applied Anthropology Laboratories (AAL) at Ball State University conducted a Phase Ia archaeological investigation at Harrison-Crawford State Forest (HCSF) with support from a Historic Preservation Fund grant.
The primary goal of this research was to identify the nature and extent of Indigenous use of Wolfpen Ridge, specifically sites 12HR599, 12HR600, 12HR622, 12HR623, and 12HR624.Research focuses on two survey areas on Wolfpen Ridge including 44.41 ac (17.97 ha) surrounding previously recorded site 12HR623 (a Middle Woodland workshop) and 48.62 ac (19.67 ha) surrounding four previously recorded sites including two Middle Woodland workshops (12HR622 and 12HR624) and two rockshelters (12HR599 and 12HR600).
Recovered artifacts include 49 historic glass, ceramic, and metal objects dating to the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and 7,913 precontact lithic artifacts from Unidentified Prehistoric, Late Archaic, and Late Woodland time periods. Ten features were documented during the survey. Fieldwork did not encounter human remains. Cultural periods represented in the artifact assemblage include Unidentified Prehistoric, Late Archaic, Late Woodland, and late nineteenth and early twentieth century Historic.
