Memories of Down the Bay: Bridging Archaeology and Oral History
Author(s): Rachel L Hines; Ryan Morini
Year: 2024
Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Paper / Report Submission (General Sessions)", at the 2024 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
Two recent concurrent projects, the I-10 Mobile River Bridge Archaeology Project and the Down the Bay Oral History Project, created complementary datasets about the history of the Down the Bay neighborhood in Mobile, Alabama. The archaeological and oral historical work enrich one another; interviews with community members and descendants reveal complex meaning behind artifact assemblages, while archaeology can be a tool for eliciting memories from oral history participants. In this paper, we examine the benefits of combining research from archaeology and oral history projects and unpack some of the challenges we faced.
