Dr. Georgia Holly will discuss the preliminary results from the UKRI Funded Project: Linking Nature and Culture for Sustainable Livelihoods: Establishing an MPA at the Island of Mozambique. In this talk, Georgia will discuss the links between the marine environment, shipwrecks, living heritage, and community on the Island of Mozambique, by presenting the combined results from the interdisciplinary archaeological, anthropological, and biological survey conducted during the most recent field season in 2023.

The talk will present lessons learnt in combining scientific and traditional knowledge within environmental management practices in the Global South, alongside the necessity for biocultural heritage to play a defining role in both heritage and biological conservation.
